A separate arrangement, not an upgrade

During normal hours, Stonehenge visitors stay on a path that keeps a distance from the stones. Special access is a different arrangement entirely: English Heritage opens the inner circle itself, but only outside those hours and only to small groups.

The rule that makes it possible

English Heritage states it plainly: no touching, leaning on, standing on or climbing the stones. It's enforced for every visitor with special access, and it's the one condition that keeps the arrangement available at all.

Guided, not self-directed

Access runs as a guided tour of the inside of the circle and the surrounding landscape, including features like the Slaughter Stone and the Heel Stone, rather than free time to wander.

Why numbers stay small

English Heritage limits how many people join a special access session, and splits the group again once everyone is inside the circle, so the stones don't end up as crowded as they can be during the day.

Weather and the open plain

Stonehenge sits on open, exposed ground, so evening sessions can be cold or windy regardless of the season. There's no shelter inside the circle itself.

Photography

Cameras and phones are welcome inside the circle. The restriction is physical contact with the stones, not photography.
